How To Grow Psilocybin Mushrooms

If you’re looking for something stronger than marijuana or simply want an invigorating psychedelic experience, you’ll want to try psilocybin mushrooms. These fascinating fungi contain the psychoactive compound psilocybin and, when consumed, will induce a range of sensational mental effects.

Low doses of psilocybin mushrooms can enhance your creativity and heighten your mood. Higher doses can bring on visual and auditory hallucinations and expand your mind. Some people even report having life-changing or spiritual experiences under the influence of magic mushrooms. As such, they’re a particularly popular product for psychonauts.

Many people buy psilocybin mushrooms online or even buy psilocybin-infused products such as magic mushroom capsules and edibles. However, if you’re feeling crafty and enjoy a good DIY project, you can also learn how to grow psilocybin mushrooms at home. Although it takes some planning and preparation, anyone can do it.

You’ll need some mushroom spores and you’ll also need a few important items to grow psilocybin mushrooms. However, once you have what you need, you can grow a large stash of shrooms to last you for a while. Here’s how to grow psilocybin mushrooms at home.

What Are Psilocybin Mushrooms?

If you’ve never used psilocybin mushrooms before, you might wonder what they are and why you should grow them. Psilocybin mushrooms are a special type of fungi that contain high levels of psilocybin – a compound known for inducing a powerful psychedelic trip when consumed. These mushrooms are widely sought-after by psychonauts.

The term “magic mushrooms” is often used interchangeably with psilocybin mushrooms. You might also hear them referred to simply as shrooms. Psilocybin is the most common psychoactive compound found in magic mushrooms, although some species also contain other compounds such as baeocystin and psilocin.

Psilocybe cubensis is the most commonly used type of magic mushroom. However, other types such as psilocybe cyanescens, psilocybe semilanceata, and copelandia cyanescens are also popular. You can find various strains of psilocybin mushrooms and each strain is a little different in terms of effects and potency.

Psilocybin mushrooms have historically been used for a range of ritualistic, recreational, and therapeutic purposes. While they were once seen as a recreational drug in the United States and Canada, they’re now gaining popularity as an alternative treatment for issues such as anxiety, depression, and addiction.

What You Need To Grow Psilocybin Mushrooms At Home

What You Need To Grow Psilocybin Mushrooms At Home

Growing psilocybin mushrooms at home is a project that anyone can try. However, before you can start growing them, you’ll need to make sure you have everything you need. The growing process doesn’t require any special equipment but you will need a few things to make sure your shrooms grow successfully.

Naturally, you’ll need to get your hands on some magic mushroom spores. These are what you use to grow magic mushrooms instead of seeds. You can find many online stores selling psilocybin mushroom spores and it’s best to get them in the form of a spore syringe – these make it easy to grow your shrooms.

You’ll also need brown rice flour and vermiculite. Along with water, these ingredients are used to create a substrate. This is the substance that your fungi feeds off of while it grows. You’ll also need perlite – this is used for the fruiting process of growing your psilocybin mushrooms. You can buy vermiculite and perlite from gardening stores whereas brown rice flour can be found in grocery stores or health stores.

As for equipment, you’ll want at least 8 to 12 glass jars for your substrate and a couple of plastic containers large enough to hold them – these will be used for incubating and fruiting your shrooms. You’ll also need a cooking pot, towel, foil, strainer, lighter, hammer, nail, and a spray bottle. Ideally, you should also have some gloves and isopropyl alcohol to disinfect your equipment.

Making Your Substrate

Making Your Substrate

Preparing your substrate is the first step to growing magic mushrooms. You’ll need brown rice flour, vermiculite, and water to make a substrate for your shroom spores. You’ll also need 8 to 12 glass jars with lids and a hammer and nail. Make sure you disinfect these objects – as well as the surface you’ll be using – and dry them before starting.

Use your hammer and nail to place four holes in each of your glass jar lids. For each jar that you plan to use, add ⅔ cup of vermiculite and ½ cup of water to a mixing bowl. Drain the water before adding ¼ cup of brown rice flour per jar. Mix thoroughly and fill your jars to an inch below the rim.

Sterilize the top inch of each jar with rubbing alcohol (you may want to use a spray bottle) and allow it to evaporate before topping the jars off with dry vermiculite. Seal each jar and apply tinfoil over the lids. You’ll then need to steam sterilize your jars in a large cooking pot.

Place a small towel (or paper towels) in the cooking pot, add your jars, and fill with water until it reaches the halfway point of your jars. Allow the water to boil and place a lid over your cooking pot. Steam the jars for 60 to 90 minutes before turning off the heat. You should then leave your jars to cool overnight – they must reach room temperature before the next step.

Inoculation involves injecting your spores into each substrate jar. The psilocybin mushroom spores will feed off of your substrate, allowing them to sprout and grow into magic mushrooms. Once again, you should disinfect your hands, apply gloves, and apply disinfectant to the surface and equipment you use to avoid contaminants ruining your spores.

Disinfect your spore syringe by heating the tip with a lighter. Once it cools, wipe it with alcohol, remove the foil from one of your jars, push the needle as far as it’ll go, and inject ¼ cc of the spore solution. Repeat this step for the rest of your jars but make sure to disinfect your needle between each one.

After injecting your spores into each jar, you’ll need to place them in an incubator. You can use a clean, disinfected plastic box with a lid as your incubator or another sealable container. Place the jars inside your incubator, seal the top, and put it in a warm, dry area with temperatures of around 20 to 28 ºC (68 to 82ºF) and relative humidity levels of 80%.

Once you’ve placed your jars of spores in an incubator, you’ll need to allow around a month for them to colonize with white mycelium. Make sure your jars are in a warm, dry place away from direct sunlight. Giving them the right level of heat and humidity will ensure your jars colonize successfully.

After 1 or 2 weeks, you should notice white threads of mycelium emerging from your spores in each jar. Make sure you regularly check your jars for signs of contamination such as green or blue mold, white fuzzy spots, or foul smells. Remove any contaminated jars as they can be dangerous for you and ruin the growth of the rest of your shrooms.

After 3 to 4 weeks, your jars should be fully colonized. Once your jars become full of white mycelium, you can move on to the fruiting process. This involves moving your jars from the incubator to a fruiting chamber, allowing them to grow into magic mushrooms.

Before moving your jars from your incubator, you’ll need to create a fruiting chamber. Once again, you can use a clean, disinfected plastic box that’s big enough to fit all of your jars. However, you’ll first need to make ¼-inch holes every 2 inches across the sides, base, and lid of your chamber to allow for airflow.

Place your fruiting chamber box on top of four stable objects to allow for airflow underneath the chamber. You might want to put a towel or paper towels underneath the box to avoid leakage. After disinfecting the bottom of your chamber with alcohol, you should drain perlite under distilled water in a sieve and use it to fill the bottom of your chamber.

Continue to add rinsed perlite to your box until you create a layer of perlite that’s 4 to 5 inches deep. You can then open your jars, remove the dry vermiculite layer from each, and remove the substrate “cakes” onto a disinfected surface. Gently rinse each cake under a cold tap to remove excess vermiculite.

Next, fill a cooking pot with tepid water and gently submerge each cake for 24 hours. This will rehydrate your cakes. Fill a mixing bowl with dry vermiculite and roll your cakes in it until they’re coated with the vermiculite. Make a tinfoil square large enough for each cake and spread them throughout your fruiting chamber before applying your cakes.

After applying your cakes, you should mist your chamber with water around 4 times a day and fan them with air from the lid around 6 times a day, sealing the lid in between. Keep your chamber in an area with temperatures of 10 to 20 ºC (50 to 68ºF), relative humidity levels of 80% or more, and low levels of indirect light.

The fruiting process usually takes around a week or two. Within a few days of adding your cakes to your fruiting chamber, you’ll notice small pins sprouting from the cakes. Your mushrooms will continue to grow and, around 5 to 12 days after the pins form, you should notice the veils of your shroom caps start to break.

Once you see the veils of your mushroom caps start to crack or break, they’re ready for harvest. Some of your psilocybin mushrooms will be ready before others, so make sure you monitor your fruiting chamber daily and harvest each cake once it’s ready.

To harvest your magic mushrooms, disinfect your hands, wear gloves, and cut them close to the cake using a disinfected knife or scissors. You should then apply your harvested shrooms to a bed of paper towels for a few days for them to try. Once they dry, store them safely in a disinfected and sealed container in a cool, dry place such as a cabinet or drawer.

Your cakes can continue to produce shrooms for a while, so keep each cake in the fruiting chamber and continue to harvest your psilocybin mushrooms. You can also regenerate your cakes once the shrooms they grow start to become sparser – submerge the cake in ice cold water for 10 minutes before reapplying it to the fruiting chamber.
