What “stale” weed actually is
Cannabis doesn’t spoil like milk. What smokers call “stale” is almost always terpene loss.
Terpenes are the aromatic oils that give each strain its smell and much of its flavour. They’re volatile: they evaporate with time, heat, light, and rough handling. Aroma goes first, then flavour. What’s left is the flat, hay-like taste that makes a $12 gram taste like baled grass.

Every handoff – cultivator to distributor, distributor to store, backroom to shelf – is a place where sealed flower sits under lights at room temperature, slowly losing the compounds that make it smell alive.

The classic sign. Terpenes have dried out or evaporated. The flower may still smoke fine – but it will not taste like much.
Worse than hay. Long past its aromatic best.

Fresh-cured flower has a little spring – it squeezes and recovers. Stale flower crumbles to dust. Over-dry flower burns fast and hot.
Faded colour and a dust of crumbled keef at the bottom of the bag suggest rough handling and long storage.
What we don’t recommend: hunting for a pack date. Packaging dates are inconsistent across the industry, and a date on a sticker tells you less than 10 seconds with your nose.
Stale vs moldy: one is quality, one is safety
Stale weed is a quality problem. Moldy weed is a safety problem. Do not confuse the two.
Mold on cannabis looks like white fuzzy patches or powdery spots – similar to mold on bread – and smells damp or musty, like a wet basement. If you see it or smell it, discard it. Smoking moldy flower is genuinely bad for you, and no amount of baking it into edibles makes it safe.
Stale flower, by contrast, is just quiet flower. The terpenes left the building. It’s a disappointment, not a hazard.

How to keep flower fresh at home
Once a package is opened, the same rules apply to everyone, retail and mail-order alike:
A glass jar with a real lid. Every time the container opens, terpenes escape – reseal properly.
A cupboard beats a windowsill. UV light strips terpenes fast.
Freezing makes trichomes brittle (they snap off in handling), and fridges cycle humidity in a way that invites mold.
