What are phoenix tears?
Phoenix tears is the common name for Rick Simpson Oil (RSO), a thick, dark cannabis oil made from the whole plant. Unlike refined products such as THC distillate, which isolates a single cannabinoid, RSO keeps a wider range of the plant's compounds, which is why it is dark, strongly flavoured and usually taken in very small amounts.
The name comes from Rick Simpson, a Canadian who popularized the style of oil. Whatever you call it, RSO and phoenix tears are the same thing: a full-plant extract meant to be taken by mouth, one small measured amount at a time.
How to take RSO
RSO is usually taken by mouth, either on its own or in a bit of food. Because it is taken orally, the effects take 1 to 2 hours to fully arrive and last longer than inhaled cannabis, so go slowly and wait before taking more. Some people apply it topically. It is not designed for smoking or vaping.
Dosing: a grain-of-rice-sized amount is the usual starting point. The products on this page list their sizes and concentrations, so check each product page. Our phoenix tears guide covers dosing in more detail.
RSO vs distillate vs tinctures
RSO is a full-plant oil, usually taken by mouth. Distillate is refined to a single cannabinoid with no plant flavour, and can be taken by mouth (if activated), dabbed or vaped. Tinctures are measured droppers that are lighter-tasting and easier to portion than RSO. If you want the most refined and predictable option, distillate; if you want the whole-plant extract, RSO is that. Our THC oil page gathers capsules, tinctures and oils in one place.
