What are cannabis edibles?
Cannabis edibles are food products infused with THC, CBD, or both. Instead of inhaling, you digest the cannabinoids, which changes everything: the onset is slower, the effects last longer, and the high itself feels different.
The most popular formats in Canada are gummies, chocolates, baked goods, drinks, and capsules. Each has its own onset time and dosing style, but the underlying principle is the same: eat it, wait, feel it.
How edibles work differently than smoking
When you smoke cannabis, THC enters your bloodstream through the lungs and hits you within minutes. When you eat it, THC travels through your digestive system and gets processed by the liver, which converts it to 11-hydroxy-THC. That metabolite is more potent and longer-lasting than smoked THC. (Most edibles are made with THC distillate, the same extract used in vape products.)
This is why edibles catch people off guard. The high builds slowly (30 minutes to 2 hours), peaks around 2-3 hours, and can last 6-8 hours or more. It's a different experience from the quick fade of a joint or a vape.
Types of cannabis edibles
Gummies are the best-selling format for good reason: precise dosing, easy to split, and flavours that actually taste good. Most Canadian brands offer THC gummies at 5mg, 10mg, or 20mg per piece. Check out our Elevtd lineup for premium gumdrops in 270mg and 450mg strengths, see the full THC gummies lineup for every brand we carry.
Chocolates and baked goods are the classic format. They take slightly longer to kick in than gummies (more fat to digest) but the effect is smooth.
Drinks (teas, sodas, sparkling waters) are the fastest-acting edible format because they absorb like a liquid. Onset can be 15-20 minutes.
Capsules are the medical angle: consistent dosing, no taste, easy to track. They're the slowest onset (up to 90 minutes) but the most predictable.
How long do edibles take to kick in?
It depends on the format and your metabolism, but here's the honest range:
- Gummies and baked goods: 30-90 minutes
- Drinks: 15-30 minutes
- Capsules: 60-90 minutes
The worst mistake with edibles is impatience. Taking more because "it's not working yet" at the 45-minute mark is how people end up way too high. Wait at least 2 hours before judging whether your dose was right.
How long do edibles last?
The full arc is roughly 6-8 hours for most people. You'll feel the ramp in the first hour, the peak between 2-3 hours, and a gradual taper through hours 4-6. Some people feel lingering effects at hour 8, especially with higher doses.
Plan accordingly: don't take a 30mg edible an hour before dinner with your in-laws.
Dosing guide: from first-timer to heavy hitter
This is where a lot of guides stop at 20mg and call it a day. That's fine advice for beginners, but plenty of recreational users have a much higher tolerance. Here's the honest breakdown across the full range:
First-timer (2.5-5mg): Start here if you've never had an edible. One 5mg gummy is enough to feel a warm, noticeable buzz. You'll know it's working, but you're still functional. This is the dose most people should use for a week or two before moving up.
Light to standard (5-15mg): The sweet spot for most occasional users. One 10mg gummy is the most common recreational dose in Canada. Expect a proper high that lasts several hours without knocking you out.
Experienced (15-30mg): Regular users with a few months of tolerance. At this dose, edibles become a full experience rather than a background buzz. 20-30mg is what most people settle into as their standard once their tolerance develops.
Heavy hitter (30-60mg): For users with a built-up tolerance who need more to feel the same effect. Many long-term edible users sit in this range for their daily dose. If you're here, you already know your body and how you react. Two 20mg gummies or a high-dose chocolate will get you there.
Very high (60-100mg+): For serious tolerance, medical patients, and people who use edibles daily. This is the range where edibles become a deeply sedative, full-body experience. Not for casual use. If you're new to this range, know that the effects compound fast and the difference between 60mg and 80mg is bigger than the difference between 10mg and 30mg.
Whatever range you're in, the same rule applies: know your dose before you take it, and don't mix doses with alcohol. Edibles and booze don't play well together.
How to choose the right edible for you
Three questions narrow it down fast:
1. What's your tolerance? If you smoke weed daily, start at 20mg. If you've never tried edibles, start at 5mg.
2. What's the occasion? A 10mg gummy is great for a movie night. A 30mg chocolate is better for a day off. Capsules are better for a consistent medical dose.
3. How fast do you want it to hit? Drinks are fastest (15-20 min). Gummies and chocolates take 30-90 minutes. Capsules are slowest but last the longest.
Browse the products above, check the dose per piece, and pick based on where you fall on the tolerance scale. The guide under each product lists the exact mg so you can compare fairly.
Legality: are edibles legal in Canada?
Yes. Edible cannabis has been legal Canada-wide since October 2019 under the Cannabis Act. There are limits: Health Canada caps THC at 10mg per package for legal retail products, but online dispensaries like BMWO operate under a different framework with higher-dose products available. You must be 19+ to purchase (18 in Alberta, 21 in Quebec).
