Runtz has an unusually well-documented origin for a modern strain: around 2017 in Los Angeles, Ray Bama - holding rare indoor Zkittlez - crossed it with Gelato 33, hunted the phenos, and the Runtz crew (with promotion from Yung LB) turned the winner into a phenomenon. The colourful mylar bags became cultural artifacts; by 2020 Leafly crowned it Strain of the Year, and the name metastasized into a franchise - White Runtz, Pink Runtz, Banana Runtz and dozens more. The original cross also circulated as Gelato Zkittlez from Purple Caper Seeds. The recipe was simple and perfect: Zkittlez candy fruit over the Gelato creamy-gas backbone, and half the modern exotic menu now follows the blueprint it wrote.
