What is hash?

Hash (hashish) is one of the oldest cannabis concentrates in the world. It's made by collecting and compressing the trichomes (the resin glands) from the cannabis plant, separating them from the plant material. The result is a dense, potent concentrate that delivers a clean, full-body high.

Hash is different from flower in three key ways: higher THC concentration (typically 20-60% vs 15-25% in flower), a different consumption experience (smoother, more body-focused), and a longer shelf life when stored properly. Hash sits between flower and extracts like shatter in both texture and potency.

Types of hash available in Canada

How to use hash

The most common methods:

• Crumble and roll: crumble a small piece into a joint or bowl with flower. This is the easiest method and the most common.
• Pipe or bong: place a small piece on a screen and apply heat. Burns slower and hotter than flower.
• Vaporize: use a concentrate vaporizer or dab rig for the cleanest experience.
• Hot knife: the old-school method: heat a knife, press it against the hash, and inhale the vapour through a bottle.

Dosing: hash is significantly more potent than flower. Start with a piece the size of a grain of rice. Wait 10-15 minutes before judging the effect, especially if you're mixing with flower.

How to tell good hash from bad

Three things to check:

1. Texture. Good hash is slightly pliable at room temperature, and it should soften with body heat without crumbling. If it's rock-hard or bone-dry, it's either old or over-processed.

2. Smell. Good hash has a distinct aroma: earthy, spicy, or sweet depending on the type. If it smells like hay or has no smell, it's low quality.

3. Bubble test. If you can dab or vaporize a small piece, good hash should bubble cleanly. Poor-quality hash burns black or produces harsh smoke.

How to store hash

Keep it in an airtight container (parchment paper inside a small glass jar works well) in a cool, dark place. Refrigeration extends shelf life but make sure the container is sealed, as hash absorbs odours. Properly stored, hash keeps for a year or more without significant potency loss.
