What is shatter?
Shatter is a glass-like cannabis concentrate with a translucent, brittle texture. It's made by extracting cannabinoids and terpenes from the plant using a solvent (usually butane or CO2), then purging the solvent to leave a stable, glassy sheet of extract.
The name comes from the way it breaks: snap a piece off and it shatters like glass. High-quality shatter is clear to amber in colour, snaps cleanly, and melts cleanly when vaporized.
Shatter is one of the most potent cannabis products available, typically containing 60-90% THC. A piece the size of a grain of rice delivers what a full bowl of flower would.
How to use shatter
The most common methods:
- Dab rig: heat a nail (quartz or titanium), place a small piece of shatter on it, and inhale the vapour through the rig. This is the standard method for concentrates.
- Dab pen / wax pen: load a small piece into a vaporizer designed for concentrates. Portable, discreet, no torch needed. See our vape pens for concentrate-ready devices.
- Twaxing: add a thin layer of shatter to the outside of a joint before rolling. Combines the slow burn of a joint with the potency of a concentrate.
- Bowl topper: place a small piece on top of flower in a bowl. The shatter melts into the flower as you smoke.
Dosing: start with a piece the size of a grain of rice or smaller. Shatter is far more potent than flower. Wait 5-10 minutes before judging the effect. If dabbing, one small dab is usually enough.
How to store shatter
Keep shatter in its original container or wrap it in parchment paper, then store in a cool, dark place. Avoid direct sunlight and heat, which degrade the terpenes and can change the texture from glassy to sap-like. Refrigeration extends shelf life but let it come to room temperature before handling, because cold shatter is more brittle and harder to break cleanly.
How to tell good shatter from bad
Appearance: good shatter is translucent (clear to amber). If it's opaque, cloudy, or waxy, it may have trapped solvent or moisture.
Snap test: pull a small piece. Good shatter breaks cleanly with a snap. If it bends or tears instead, it may have too much residual moisture.
Taste: good shatter tastes like the strain it came from: fruity, earthy, or gassy depending on the terpene profile. If it tastes chemical or harsh, the purge may have been incomplete.
Shatter vs other concentrates
Shatter vs wax: both are solvent extracts, but shatter is purged longer to create the glassy texture. Wax is softer and easier to handle but may retain slightly more solvent.
Shatter vs live resin: live resin is made from flash-frozen plant, preserving more terpenes and giving a richer flavour. Shatter is made from dried plant and has a more stable texture. Prefer a richer terpene profile? See our live resin selection.
Shatter vs hash: hash is mechanically extracted (no solvents), with lower THC content (20-60%) but a fuller entourage effect. Shatter is more potent but more one-dimensional.
Is shatter legal in Canada?
Yes. Shatter and other cannabis extracts are legal Canada-wide under the Cannabis Act. You must be 19+ to purchase (18 in Alberta, 21 in Quebec). All products on this page ship discreetly via Canada Post Xpress. Browse the full cannabis concentrates range for other extract formats.
